2011 RUMBLE WRAP UP
The 20th Annual Pottstown Rumble brought uncustomary conditions: 2 beautiful sunny days with clear skies and 78 degree weather. I’d like to say the tournament went off without a hitch, but when the star spangled banner was scheduled to play Saturday morning, the sound was cut and over 1,000 players were left standing around waiting for an anthem. A very special thanks goes out to the young lady who stepped up in the moment and sang a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. We are still looking for you! Contact us!
The Women’s Open final Saturday night hosted local Pottstown product Lori Barth and teammate Kristin Carpenter versus Angie Smith and Nina Camaioni. Barth began playing the rumble as a teenager and has climbed through the divisions over the years. In a very exciting final match, Smith and Camiaoni defeated Barth and Carpenter 15-11. Congratulations to both teams.
The Men’s Open Field hosted 67 pro teams. Sunday’s opening playoff match saw Dana Kamacho & new partner John Moran pitted against Tim Church and Badger Bergman. Kamacho and Church were 2010 champions together which led to a very competitive and at times heated match. Kamacho & Moran got the better of this matchup winning 15-12 and set the tone for excellent center court matches all day. Kamacho & Moran later fell to the McGinley brothers in a quarter-finals thriller 17-15. The team of Hudson Bates and Mark Burik were just too strong this year, bringing some of the hardest jump serves the Rumble has seen to Sunday’s playoff matches. The future champs ran through 6 time champions Beetle Bailey & Jason Robertson 15-5 and later defeated former champs Derick Smith & Jason Peifer in the finals 15-9 to take home their first championship. The team of Eric Ryba & Danny Sutton made a strong run deep into Sunday defeating last year’s runner ups Eric Lucas and Mik Berzins before losing to Smith & Peifer in the semifinals. Congratulations to Bates & Burik for a weekend of strong play and bringing home the $4,000 cash prize.
It was another record year for the Pottstown Rumble. We hosted 1,032 players Saturday making up 516 teams on 111 nets. Sunday saw 890 players part of 342 teams on 69 nets. Total numbers for the weekend: A record 858 teams on 180 nets totaling 1,922 players!!
Special thanks to the Rumble staff - so many volunteers make this event happen. Thank you to the players who make this event what it is. You are the reason the Rumble is a great success and continues to grow. Let’s shoot for 2,000 players next year!!
